This course aims to provide PhD students with research skills that are essential to become a successful researcher. The need for research ethics and the responsibility of the researcher (the student) and to avoid committing acts of academic dishonesty (such as through using citations and references). The topics of this course will include research methodology, professional ethics and academic integrity, and oral presentation and paper writing techniques. Students will be required to perform a literature survey, to construct a research proposal, and to write a paper summary in the style of formal scientific paper, in one of their familiar research topics. Prerequisite: None

CILO-1: Develop a thorough understanding of research methodology and its application to PhD-level research. CILO-2: Demonstrate ethical and responsible conduct in research, including avoidance of academic dishonesty. CILO-3: Analyze and evaluate research articles critically, using proper citation and referencing techniques. CILO-4: Develop effective oral presentation and paper writing skills for communicating research findings. CILO-5: Construct a research proposal and write a scientific paper summary in the appropriate style, based on a literature survey and in a familiar research topic.
