Course Description
We will study how and why certain behaviors are considered dangerous enough to deserve negative sanctions, how deviant careers are socially constructed, and how deviants and conventional society cope with each other. In addition to theories, we will study criminal behavior, drug use, heterosexual and homosexual deviance, physical deviance such as body piercing and tattooing, religious deviance, and mental disorders, etc.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: State the nature and sources of deviant behaviour and explain various theories of deviance.
CILO-2: Describe the role of social power in defining categories of deviance and various methods (social controls) used to regulate and normalize deviant behaviours.
CILO-3: Analyze the manner in which society responds to deviant behaviour. Explore the characteristics, causes, and consequences of a deviant label.
CILO-4: Explain particular forms of deviant behaviours particularly relevant to young people, such as suicide and mental disorder.
