Course Description
In this course, emphasis will be on the research findings from the study of cognitive development, particularly the development of thinking in the first decade of life. We will examine children's understanding of the physical world, psychological kinds, biological entities, number, objects, and spcae. Topics to be explored include theories in cognitive development, neural development, language development, conceptual development, social cognition, and academic achievements in reading and mathematics.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Obtain knowledge and an understanding of basic facts, theories, methodologies, research findings, and current issues pertaining to cognitive development.
CILO-2: Describe how changes in children's thinking occurs, and how knowledge about changes in children's thinking can be applied to improve children's well-being.
CILO-3: Identify key research questions and hypotheses in primary scientific articles and critically evaluate the evidence presented.
CILO-4: Critically read texts, tables and figures about research in cognition and cognitive development as it is presented in public media.
