Course Description
This course provides the fundamental skills and knowledge needed to understand and use statistical procedures in basic psychological research. Topics cover basic descriptive and inferential statistics, including measures of central tendency and variability, probability, sampling, the normal distribution, hypothesis testing and statistical power, t-tests for means, analysis of variance, correlation and simple linear regression. Activities will include the use of statistical software packages to explore data and conduct an analysis.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Explain such concepts as the normal distribution and probabilities, hypothesis testing, central limit theorem, sampling distribution of a statistic, Type I and II errors, etc.
CILO-2: Identify the appropriate statistical tests for different research situations and the students’ own research questions.
CILO-3: Describe data in terms of central tendency, variability, and skewness.
CILO-4: Conduct such statistical tests as z-tests, t-tests, analysis of variance, and correlations, and interpret computer printouts of those statistical tests.
