Course Description
The course covers the topic of language variation in Portuguese, introducing some of the major theories thereon, and descriptive analytic practices. The course is configured to address sociolinguistic topics of particular relevance to the future Portuguese language professional, giving special attention to social and regional linguistic variation, and registers. The course also addresses the application of sociolinguistic variation in the context of Portuguese Foreign Language instruction.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify the importance of studies in linguistics, in general, and in sociolinguistics in particular; To know the different areas of sociolinguistics and their objects and research methods; Develop a critical attitude and reflection on the various theore.
CILO-2: Present the origins and evolution of the field of Sociolinguistics.
CILO-3: Identify and describe the overall main areas of study of Sociolinguistics.
CILO-4: Be acquainted with the phenomenon of language variation.
CILO-5: Identify, analyze and describe certain instances of language variation within the Portuguese language.
CILO-6: Transcribe and annotate language data using specific software.
CILO-7: Search and identify instances of language variation.
