The course introduces basic concepts of the phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and lexicon of Portuguese, with the purpose of developing the student’s knowledge of the grammatical system of Portuguese and the ability to describe and analyse the language for learning and pedagogical applications.

CILO-1: Use specific linguistic terminology in the description of Portuguese grammar. CILO-2: Explain the difference between language and speech. CILO-3: Distinguish normative grammar and prescriptive grammar. CILO-4: Identify the main regular/irregular patterns of Portuguese grammatical structures. CILO-5: Establish the relation between synchronous and diachronic linguistics. CILO-6: Establish the relation between syntagmatic relations and paradigmatic relations. CILO-7: Describe aspects of the functioning of the Portuguese and Chinese languages.
