Course Description
This course aims to critically examine contemporary legal issues in international economic relations. Specific topics in international economic order including the actors, principles, legal sources and economic organizations will be explored. International trade law will be addressed in detail and international monetary, taxation, banking and financial relations will be introduced. World Trade Organization (WTO) regimes governing trade in goods, services, TRIPS, competition policy, dispute settlement, emerging jurisprudence and regional cooperation will be studied. Current developments in international monetary law, the role of IMF and World Bank, developmental aid and economic sanctions, cooperation on taxation, banking and financial markets regulation will be introduced.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Students will be able to explain the role of international norms and organizations in promoting and sustaining global economic relations involving states as well as other economic players.
CILO-2: Students will be able to distinguish key fields of international economic legal order and identify significant legal issues and norms in the respective fields.
CILO-3: Students will be able to illustrate the fundamental legal principles of international trade law and analyze specific World Trade Organization (WTO) norms governing various legal issues and sectors of global trade, and to appraise the interpretations and findings of World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement panels and appellate bodies and assess emerging jurisprudence in global and regional trade regimes.
CILO-4: Students will be able to recognize various legal issues, norms and questions arising in other fields of international economic order including international monetary regime, tax cooperation, regulation of banking and finance, development and economic sanctions and to describe the role of key international organizations in maintaining international economic order and demonstrate the significance of inter-organizational coordination and cooperation.
