Course Description
The European Union, the European Communities and their legal system. The objectives. The institutions and bodies and their powers. The judicial system. The sources and scope of Community law. The interpretation and application of Community law, including the application of Community law by the Members States. The relationship between Community domestic law of the Members States.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Students will be able to identify and evaluate the historical and theoretical underpinnings of the EU as a new international institution.
CILO-2: Students will be able to describe and explain the main principles and rules governing the Union organs, decision-making procedures and enforcement mechanisms.
CILO-3: Students will be able to define and critically evaluate the relations between the EU and its member States and between the EU legal order and the national legal orders.
CILO-4: Students will be able to explain and analyze the way in which particular areas of regulation function and how they were developed through the case law of the European Court of Justice, and to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of legal rules, relevant legal concepts, values and principles for different policies of the EU, and the ability to appreciate and discuss their contextual, social and political implications.
