Course Description
Contemporary issues arising in distinct fields of international law will be critically examined. Specific norms and principles of international law and emerging doctrinal debates will be introduced before contemporary questions are examined. Possible topics include traditional and modern sources and subjects, treaties, sovereignty, immunities and privileges, statehood and territorial disputes, asylum and extradition, state responsibility, collective security and unilateral use of force.. Contemporary issues will be identified and reviewed in the light of recent judicial and arbitral decisions, regional developments and emerging state practices. Legal questions emanating from certain conflicts and current agenda of specific international organizations will be reviewed.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Students will be able to identify and critically analyze contemporary legal issues arising in International Law.
CILO-2: Students will be able to illustrate norms and principles in key topics of international law and appraise emerging doctrinal debates in related topics.
CILO-3: Students will be able to outline the key developments in contemporary treaties and in the codification process of customary law.
CILO-4: Students will be able to deduce the emerging jurisprudence from the interpretative process of international courts and tribunals in recent cases, and to review the latest agenda of specific international or regional organizations and determine potential legal debates.
