Course Description
This course introduces students to the basic principles and rules of the law of evidence, and also to the types of evidence and their distinctive features. Legal rules of evidence are analysed in light of the trial structure and procedure of law. Both civil and criminal evidence issues are considered. Students will also be taught how to apply the law of evidence in practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Students will be able to explain the basic rules of evidence applicable in criminal and civil proceedings, and of the rationale for various evidentiary rules.
CILO-2: Students will be able to apply the rules of evidence within the adjudicative or legal process or context, determine facts and truth, and thereby make findings of liability in civil and criminal proceedings.
CILO-3: Students will be able to advise clients on preserving evidence in anticipation of litigation and legal proceedings, and properly use that evidence in subsequent proceedings.
