Course Description
This course provides a hands-on opportunity for students to learn the basic experimental techniques and instruments used in a biochemistry laboratory, and develop analytical and problem-solving skills required for the pursuit of future careers in the health science area. Major topics covered include purification of biomolecules, concentration determination and gel electrophoresis, western blotting, chromatography, and enzyme kinetics. Students also practice scientific data collection, analysis and presentation through the semester.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Operate biochemical experiments following proper laboratory safety practices.
CILO-2: Operate biochemical experiments with basic biochemical laboratory skills and through the use of biochemical tools and equipment.
CILO-3: Predict expected outcome of an experiment based on biochemical principles.
CILO-4: Interpret results to reach scientific conclusions from experimental data.
CILO-5: Formulate written reports and oral presentations for scientific communication in clear language, with appropriate calculations, diagrams and graphs.
