Course Description
This course introduces the molecular basis of biological processes through the logic of chemistry. Topics covered include the structure and function of biomolecules, biochemistry techniques, basic metabolic pathways, and a brief introduction to the biochemical bases of relevant disease states.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Recognize the basic structures of major biomolecules and identify their functional groups.
CILO-2: Describe basic architecture of protein and how to analyze protein structure using biochemical techniques.
CILO-3: Describe the function and regulation of enzymes and the methods to quantitatively measure their effectiveness.
CILO-4: Describe the chemical composition and structure of biological membranes and the mechanisms of membrane transport.
CILO-5: Describe the principles and concepts underlying common biochemistry techniques.
CILO-6: Recognize the major metabolic pathways in the cell.
CILO-7: Explain how the above pathways are regulated and integrated.
CILO-8: Explain the alterations in lipid and carbohydrate metabolisms that occur as a result of diabetes.
CILO-9: Explain the metabolism of lipoproteins and medical problems associated with abnormal lipoprotein levels.
CILO-10: Describe the metabolism of nutrients into energy for use by the human body, and the role of nutrients in disease pathology.
