This course provides advanced grounding in the methods and concerns of the modern historical discipline. Students are exposed to some of the major intellectual trends and traditions that have informed how the historians of today pursue their craft. The immediate purpose of this training is to help students begin to formulate and research their dissertation topic.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Reflect critically on the changing goals and motivations for writing history, and apply insights from the course in framing their own paper (and eventually dissertation) topics.
CILO-2: Grapple with the perennial role of history in public life and to the many uses of history both within and without the academy.
CILO-3: Develop skills of critical thinking necessary for qualified doctoral candidates.
