Course Description
This course will offer interpretation of foundational Buddhist scriptures and paintings in their historical, literary, and philosophical contexts to trace the development of Indian Buddhism as well as its process of cultural accommodations in East Asia.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Explore the world of Buddhist art from individual painting and sculpture throughout India, Central Asia and China.
CILO-2: Examine images in their original physical, religious, as well as cultural contexts.
CILO-3: Engage with Buddhist art history and develop skills of visual analysis and a critical vocabulary for discussing iconographies in Chinese Buddhist art for future research.
