This course is to discuss the evolution of military force in China from the early Qing to the Korean War, including the Eight Banners, Green Standard, Militia, New Army, and People’s Liberation Army. The course will introduce the major fights, battles, and wars, such as the Opium Wars, Taiping Rebellion, Sino-French War, Sino-Japanese War, War of Resistance against Japanese, and Civil War. The course will also analyze the military ideas, tactics, and strategies of major military leaders such as Li Xiucheng, Zeng Guofan, and Mao Zedong. The instructor will guide students to read some important works on the subject.

CILO-1: Present a narrative of modern Chinese military history. CILO-2: Demonstrate broad knowledge of important military strategy, technology, battles and figures. CILO-3: Explain and criticize major military challenges, achievements, and failures. CILO-4: Identify primary sources and conduct appropriate researches in the field. CILO-5: Acquire basic reading and writing skills in military history of Modern China.
