Course Description
This is a survey of Chinese painting history from the pre-Han period to the Qing dynasty. This course examines the most important artists and their representative masterpieces of painting, and the major artistic movements of each dynastic period to study essences of Chinese art. We particularly stress important development in style and subject matter. As appropriate, issues in style and subject matter will be related to contemporary development in philosophy, religion, government, society, and culture.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify and explain the values intrinsic to Chinese painting and calligraphy, regardless of whether these values parallel western artistic concerns or conflict with them.
CILO-2: Describe and interpret the stylistic development of Chinese painting, and distinguish the paintings of one period from that of another.
CILO-3: Acquire basic skills of visual analysis and a critical vocabulary for traditional Chinese paintings.
CILO-4: Acquire basic skills of examining the appearance of each new type of paintings against the political and cultural changes of the time.
CILO-5: Acquire basic research and writing skills in field of history of Chinese painting.
