Course Description
This course on Japan covers the Tokugawa to the postwar period. It examines the profound political, economic, and social transformation of Japan before and after Perry’s Mission, the Meiji Restoration, the rise and fall of the Imperial Japan, and the development of postwar Japan. It focuses on the issues of modernization, imperialism, militarism, democracy, and economic success.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Possess the basic knowledge of the developments and historical traits of Japanese history.
CILO-2: Possess the basic knowledge of Japanese historical relations, conflicts and cultural, and economic interactions with China and other countries.
CILO-3: Analyze the cultural differences between Japan and China within a broad East Asian tradition.
CILO-4: Explain Macao’s historical role in early globalization in connection with Japanese history from the mid-fifteenth to the mid-seventeenth century.
CILO-5: Read Japanese history in English by learning some key concepts and vocabulary.
CILO-6: Use the basic knowledge of Japanese history to analyze Chinese history through a comparative perspective.
CILO-7: Acquire basic reading and writing skills in the history of Japan.
