Course Description
This course is an introductory survey of major artists and their works, as well as artistic trends in the history of Western art. Students will explore works of painting, sculpture, and architecture in Europe and the Near East from the Stone Age, through medieval periods to the modern time. Lectures focus on the historical outlines of the major art movements. We will also focus on developing students’ critical faculties – the ability to apprehend and comprehend a work of art.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify and describe the key works of painting, sculpture, and architecture in Europe and the Near East from the Stone Age, through medieval periods to modern time.
CILO-2: Identify the general themes and issues important to art historical analysis.
CILO-3: Analyze the works of art and the ways in which these monuments functions within the historical, cultural, social, and religious contexts.
CILO-4: Acquire the appropriate vocabulary and critical tools for discussing about works of art and architecture.
CILO-5: Acquire basic research and writing skills in field of history of western arts.
