Course Description
This survey course introduces students to a wide range of historical issues about Portugal from world power in the Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries to the Portuguese Empire in the 19th century and up to the present. The course focuses on political, social, cultural, and economic developments, including the expansion and decline of the Portuguese Empire, the end of monarchy and the development of the Republic, and Portugal’s integration into Europe and its global involvement.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Demonstrate understanding of the major events and developments in Portugal and its empire from Antiquity to the Carnation Revolution through readings and course assignments.
CILO-2: Explain and critique the historical processes leading to the formation of Portugal and the Portuguese empire as well as decolonization.
CILO-3: Analyze and explain the impact of developments in Portugal and the Portuguese empire on each other and on world history.
CILO-4: Synthesize and create new narratives to explain the history of Portugal and its overseas activities.
CILO-5: Acquire basic reading and writing skills in the history of Portugal and its maritime expansion.
