Course Description
This is a survey course on modern China from the 17th century to the establishment and decline of the Republic in the early 20th century. It traces the social disorders and transformations of modern China, covering such topics as the Ming-Qing dynastic wars, internal rebellions and foreign wars, the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the political disintegration and reintegration under the Republic, the attempts at reforms and modernization, and the rise and victory of Chinese Communism in 1949. This course explores the issues of imperialism, nationalism, revolution, communism, totalitarianism, and modernization.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Demonstrate knowledge of major events in China from the Ming-Qing transition to the Communist takeover in 1949 and the causes through readings and course assignments.
CILO-2: Explain and critique the processes contributing to the rise and fall of the Qing empire and Republican China.
CILO-3: Critically analyze major developments in modern Chinese history as well as the causes and impacts.
CILO-4: Synthesize and create new narratives to explain the trajectory of history from the Ming-Qing transition to the Communist takeover in 1949.
CILO-5: Acquire basic research and writing skills in the field of Chinese history.
