Course Description
This comprehensive course offers an in-depth examination of one of the most dynamic and rapidly evolving regions in the world. Various parts of the Asia Pacific have witnessed remarkable economic growth, increasingly sensitive security situations, and significantly increased involvement and influence in global affairs. This course thoroughly explores the interconnectedness of these realms, both from historical and contemporary perspectives, encompassing both intra- and inter-regional dimensions. This course places significant emphasis on the influence of historical factors, domestic political contexts, and international pressure in shaping the formulation and evolution of foreign policies, and their consequential impacts on the broader realm of Asia-Pacific international relations. While grounded in empirical analysis, it also provides students with a theoretical framework to comprehend the dynamics of the Asia Pacific region.
To examine these various dimensions, this course critically examines the influential forces shaping global affairs, with particular emphasis on their impact in the Asia Pacific. Meanwhile, a key focus of the course is to assess the potential for hegemonic competition among major actors such as the United States, China, and Japan within the evolving regional order. Furthermore, it examines the role of small and middle powers and regional organizations such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the development of regional strategic landscapes.
