This course introduces students to public international law and the institutional regimes of global governance. We will examine the role of written rules and agreements (treaties) as well as customary practices that govern relations between states. The course begins with an exploration of the law and institutions related to international security, an area in which some of the oldest practices of international law have emerged. We will then discuss the effectiveness of international law in regulating international economic, human rights, and environmental issues.
