Course Description
This course deals with governance reforms (and their limitations) in China during the transition to market socialism. It explores the factors necessitating the reforms, the impact of the reforms on state-society relations, the emergence of a civil society and the rising political aspiration of the people.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Acquire a clear understanding of the key characteristics of contemporary Chinese politics.
CILO-2: Explain the way that the Chinese state and society have been structured and organized.
CILO-3: Recognize the institutional parameters that have defined and redefined authority relations in people’s daily life.
CILO-4: Critically assess the characteristics of the Chinese party-state system, the functions of various government agencies, and the policy toolkits the government uses.
