Course Description
This course is designed to investigate the broad spectrum of business and society as well as sustainability issues that individuals have to face today and will face in the future. It will also provide students with the broad functions and role of business in society, and knowledge in balancing economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities to the variety of stakeholder groups with which businesses interact with the society. This course will explain the nature of business, its purpose and contribution to society as well as management’s role in business and the overlapping influence of business, economy, and society. It involves discussion on these issues and debate that pertain to these relationships. Within the context of business, the course focuses on entrepreneurial behaviors which include social and business entrepreneurship (i.e. new venture creation and management), creativity, and innovation. Within its relationship to society, it will consider citizenship behaviors through topics as stakeholder management and corporate social responsibility.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Recognize the importance of the business enterprise and society relationship, and how business enterprise contributes in the modern society’s development.
CILO-2: Explain how key business enterprise functions are related to each other and fit together within the larger institutional contexts such as economic, environmental, political-legal, and socio-cultural sectors.
CILO-3: Explain the impact of globalization underpinning organizational and societal structures and systems.
CILO-4: Describe the dynamic relationships across different stakeholders of the society and the forces promoting conflict or harmony among these stakeholders in relation to corporate social responsibility of organizations.
CILO-5: Describe and explain the value of citizenship behavior within the context of a business enterprise and its corporate social responsibility.
CILO-6: Describe of key societal issues facing entrepreneurs and citizens in Macao, China, and neighboring countries.
CILO-7: Explain creative and innovative behaviors of becoming successful social and business entrepreneurs of their own different fields.
