This GE course will provide an introduction to Macao and Chinese Civilization, by outlining how Macao’s unique cultural and social position affected China’s contribution to the world. It focuses first on the global processes that impacted the city’s development and how this in turn helped shape the course of Chinese history from the sixteenth century (1500s) to the present. Secondly, the course will trace how in this historical context, Chinese values spread globally and interacted with the values of other civilizations. The course will also explore the ethical dimensions of these interactions, highlighting the importance of mutual respect, cultural sensitivity, and the ethical responsibilities that come with global influence.
