Course Description
This course will examine the newest trends as well as current issues in language learning. An investigation of the most recent underlying theories and hypotheses regarding language acquisition will be combined with research reports and 'current practices' in areas such as: multimedia (CALL, internet, etc.), co-operative learning, multiple intelligences, the arts (e.g. music, art, dance, drama, literature), use of authentic materials and video, content-based and theme-based instruction, projects, critical thinking, process writing, reflection and metacognition, alternative assessment, and action research.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Examine major movements and shifts that have influenced past, current, and emerging language learning trends.
CILO-2: Articulate the implications of past, current, and emerging trends on language learners.
CILO-3: Synthesize recent research on an important topic related to language learning and discuss its impact on language acquisition, teaching, and assessment.
CILO-4: Examine language learning, teaching, and/or assessment practices via interview, observation, or analysis of materials.
CILO-5: Develop a research-based language learning curriculum (including plans and materials) that contributes to the unique needs of the students.
CILO-6: Demonstrate an ability to apply a language learning curriculum and/or explain its application in a specific learning context.
