This course will consider the theme of environmental crisis in both its historical and contemporary aspects. As well as considering issues of environmental collapse, it will comprehend also the human and cultural dimensions of disease, depopulation and migration associated with climate change and natural disaster. The course will encourage students to extend ecocriticism beyond its customary preoccupation with historical Romanticism and contemporary wilderness by fostering an interest in the depiction of environmental crisis in popular culture.
