This course aims at introducing the study of language contact and ways to analyze code-switching in different social, cultural, communicative and generic contexts. It starts with an broad survey of various language contact phenomena, and then it will focus on the major ideas and frameworks that have been proposed to analyze code-switching. The last part of the course will be devoted to the currently very popular notion of translanguaging. The discussion will draw on research on Chinese/English contact, in the hope that students who are interested in the subject will find inspiration for their MA dissertation.
