This course aims at introducing the study of language contact and ways to analyze code-switching in different social, cultural, communicative and generic contexts. It starts with an broad survey of various language contact phenomena, and then it will focus on the major ideas and frameworks that have been proposed to analyze code-switching. The last part of the course will be devoted to the currently very popular notion of translanguaging. The discussion will draw on research on Chinese/English contact, in the hope that students who are interested in the subject will find inspiration for their MA dissertation.

CILO-1: Demonstrate a critical understanding of the models and theories, in particular, their strengths and weaknesses, in the assignments. CILO-2: Demonstrate an ability in applying the models and theories in analyzing everyday discourse. CILO-3: Demonstrate an ability to analyze variation in bi/multilingual practice in different registers or genres.
