Course Description
This course will undertake an examination of the nature of international languages, global communication, and the historical context that has led to the current use of English as an international language. In addition to the study of international varieties of English, this course will examine issues such as language policy, language education, literary canons, and language change within the context of the global use of English as an international medium of communication.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Describe the theories and methods used in sociolinguistics to examine and understand the use of English in popular culture.
CILO-2: Analyze spoken and written text and video from multiple sociolinguistic perspectives.
CILO-3: Describe how English variation functions ideologically in popular culture.
CILO-4: Develop and construct a portfolio of individual and group work that illustrates the different types of Englishes in popular culture.
