Course Description
This course covers the key concepts and methods of the linguistic approach to the analysis of spoken discourse and written discourse. Topics covered will include language beyond the sentence, global and local properties of speech and writing, narrative structures, new and old information, subjects and topics, foregrounding and backgrounding.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Recognize and discuss the basic tenets of discourse studies, and the concepts involved.
CILO-2: Recognize the theoretical, practical, and ethical concerns of discourse data collection.
CILO-3: Evaluate the merits and demerits of various spoken discourse data collection methodologies.
CILO-4: Carry out basic transcription of spoken discourse data.
CILO-5: Analyze discourse in terms of structure, information flow, ideology, and genre.
