The course is a more advanced study of English syntax assuming some basic knowledge of English grammar. It describes and analyses the structure of English from a current syntactic perspective. It deals with constituency, phrase structure of different kinds and clause structure. It applies theory to practical issues in English syntax and evaluate competing analyses.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Develop general knowledge of the terminology used in syntactic analysis.
CILO-2: Demonstrate an understanding of the current trends and the relationship of the various sub-components within the Principles and Parameters Theory.
CILO-3: Apply descriptive and analytic skills in syntactic analysis.
CILO-4: Assess some significant syntactic similarities and differences among languages critically.
CILO-5: Start identifying and developing a topic for further research.
