Course Description
This course mainly introduces subtitling for film and television between English and Chinese, the primary form of audiovisual translation. The nature and characteristics, as well as translation principles and strategies pertaining to subtitling and other special topics such as dubbing and song translation will be reviewed and discussed. Emphasis is placed especially on subtitling practice and the translation techniques for overcoming the conflict between the medium constraints and comprehensibility of culture-bound utterances.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify, evaluate, and acquire the knowledge in major types, functions of audiovisual translation.
CILO-2: Translate film and television dialogues with applicable methods and strategies.
CILO-3: Construct technical knowledge of software, such as Arctime Pro, for practical tasks in subtitling and develop practical skills in the important areas of Audiovisual Translation.
CILO-4: Develop a critical vision to evaluate the quality of Audiovisual Translation project, especially how to overcome the conflict between the medium constraints and comprehensibility of culture-bound utterances.
