This course offers a general introduction to the theory and practice of translation of literary writings. It introduces core theoretical concepts of literary translation along with analyses of selected literary translations as examples. It involves appreciation and understanding of different literary genres, emphasizing identification of linguistic, stylistic and cultural features of literary texts and application of translation strategies and methods specific to literary translation.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify literary features on the basis of understanding and appreciation of literary texts and decide on appropriate translation strategies.
CILO-2: Gain a good knowledge of the basic theoretical concepts of literary translation and apply them to their own translation projects.
CILO-3: Analyze literariness of language/literary devices and employ concrete methods to render the different features of literary texts.
CILO-4: Learn methods to improve bilingual and bicultural awareness of and skills for becoming a literary translator.
CILO-5: Evaluate and make comments on translations of literary texts.
