Course Description
This course introduces the characteristic features of business and legal writings in both English and Chinese and corresponding translation strategies and methods. Texts discussed include business correspondence, tender documents, and legal contracts. Particular attention will be paid to translation problems such as legal equivalence, specialized terminology, register, and structure.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Describe the key differences between English and Chinese business/legal writings in terms of format and style.
CILO-2: Make necessary modifications (amplification/omission) when translating in either direction.
CILO-3: Use the register appropriate to the genre of text and target audience in translations.
CILO-4: Select translation strategies appropriate to the genre of text in question.
