Course Description
This course is an introduction to translation for the media. Texts to be translated include news reports, public notices and advertisements. Particular attention will be paid to the linguistic, stylistic and cultural features of writing for the media in both Chinese and English so that learners can apply appropriate strategies and methods to translating texts for different purposes.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Describe key differences between English and Chinese syntax and style.
CILO-2: Describe key features of media texts in each of the genres identified above both in English and Chinese.
CILO-3: Describe the functionalist approach to translation.
CILO-4: Select appropriate translation strategies based on a functionalist analysis of the Source Text.
CILO-5: Produce localized translations adequate to the required function in the context of media texts.
