This course will focus on an area of interest in American society within the twentieth century. American writers writing in English in different genres will be studied in relation to core themes or movements.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Demonstrate knowledge of the American literary tradition.
CILO-2: Define and identify the bildungsroman and the memoir, and explain how these genres serve to define American subjectivity.
CILO-3: Define the key terms pertaining to immigration and citizenship and describe how writers portray the impact of these terms on lived experience.
CILO-4: Analyze a literary text in terms of narrative irony and explain how it invites the reader to inhabit differing perspectives, a process known as interpellation.
