This course is designed to give the student a fuller understanding of the relationships between dramatic literature, performance, and society. This course will combine the academic study of dramatic literature with that of theatre history to demonstrate the inherently social character of drama-in-performance. A selection of plays and excerpts will be read and considered within cultural, social, and theatrical contexts.

CILO-1: Demonstrate an understanding of the history of theatrical conventions. CILO-2: Demonstrate an appreciation of the different forms in which drama is presented. CILO-3: Demonstrate an understanding of how form and function are aspects of drama. CILO-4: Explain and discuss how drama forms a key part of culture. CILO-5: Stage ensemble performances of selected scenes.
