Course Description
This course introduces students to the basic issues of linguistic morphology, the study of the structure of words. It covers important areas such as wordhood, word-formation processes, inflection, derivation, compounds and allomorphy. The course also examines current research on the relations between morphology, phonology and syntax.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Differentiate between a word and a morpheme (or morph).
CILO-2: Recognize the terminology (e.g. affixation and compounding) used in the study of word formation.
CILO-3: Apply the analytic skills to investigate existing/new words (particularly complex words) in English and other languages.
CILO-4: Evaluate the interrelation between morphology and phonology/syntax.
CILO-5: Engage appropriate strategies in handling and analyzing morphological data from languages other than English.
