Course Description
This course introduces students to the fundamental issues in the description and analysis of phrase and clause structures. Students will learn analytic skills in the survey of major syntactic phenomena, including phrase structure, constituency, the lexicon, agreement, movement, negation, clause types, and subordination.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Demonstrate an understanding of the terminology used in syntactic analysis and of the various components of current syntactic theory.
CILO-2: Analyze the basic syntactic structures of Modern English.
CILO-3: Apply the syntactic knowledge in analyzing the structures of various linguistic phenomena.
CILO-4: Summarize and evaluate some significant syntactic similarities and differences between English and other languages.
