Course Description
The course investigates the relationship between language, language use, and human cognition: how language is grounded in human perception and conceptualization at both the individual and sociocultural levels. The course will introduce students to the fundamental concepts and issues involved, including frames, attention, metaphor, metonymy, categorization, and mental spaces.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Demonstrate a basic understanding of how language is related to general cognition and culture.
CILO-2: Discuss the various pertinent theories and models.
CILO-3: Show an awareness of the conceptualisational and linguistic differences in even the most fundamental domains of human existence across cultures.
CILO-4: Show an awareness of the (subconscious) influences of culture on per/conceptualisation.
CILO-5: Conduct a small-scaled research project based on knowledge gained from the course.
