Course Description
This course will introduce the major approaches to the analysis of spoken discourse,
including conversation analysis, speech acts theory, ethnography of communication, and interactional sociolinguistics. It will equip the student with basic methodologies of data collection, transcription and analysis and establish those techniques essential for studying spoken discourse in various contexts.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Recognize and discuss the basic tenets of discourse studies, and the concepts involved.
CILO-2: Recognize the theoretical, practical, and ethical concerns of discourse data collection.
CILO-3: Implement the proper procedures of collecting usable spoken discourse data.
CILO-4: Carry out basic transcription of spoken discourse data.
CILO-5: Carry out basic analysis of spoken discourse data.
