Course Description
This course is designed to compare and contrast Chinese and English at various levels – lexical, phrasal, sentential and textual. Theoretical concepts are introduced in relation to translation problems. Upon completion of this course, students are expected to appreciate the major differences between Chinese and English, and be able to use essential linguistic tools to deal with translation problems.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Demonstrate a clear understanding of some general characteristics of the Chinese and English language.
CILO-2: Compare and contrast various linguistic properties and language-use norms between the two languages in relation to translation.
CILO-3: Make use of linguistic tools to describe and analyse translation problems.
CILO-4: Translate texts of general genres between Chinese and English with reasonable quality.
