Course Description
This course contains two main parts, the first part is about the Atomic Theory including: Hydrogen atom, Angular momentum and Pauli Exclusion Principle, Energy levels of atom, Energy bands, Fermi energy. The second part is related to Dislocation including: Defects of materials, Edge dislocation, Screw dislocation, Burgers vector, Dislocation density, Elastic property of dislocation, Force on dislocation, Stress field and strain energy of dislocation, Dislocation motion and interaction, Dislocation in real crystal, Dislocation observation. In addition, the atomic structures and properties of some new materials will be introduced.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Apply knowledge on physics to solve the physical problems in atomic bonding and structure of engineering materials
CILO-2: Identify and analyze different physical problems using different methods including Schrödinger’s equation, dislocation theory, etc.
CILO-3: Utilize modern characterization techniques to observe the atomic structure and dislocations of the materials.
