Course Description
This is a one-semester Academic English course for students with an elementary English language level. Students have six class hours every week, plus a 1-hour Talk-Time tutorial. This course improves and consolidates students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through participation in diverse and intensive academic and discipline-related activities and assessments. Academic texts and discipline-related materials are utilized to enhance students’ accurate use of grammar, enlarge their vocabulary and facilitate their development of language skills for a variety of academic contexts. The course provides a foundation for students to further develop the academic English skills and abilities necessary for studying academic subjects at university level in English.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
1. understand elementary level academic lectures and presentations.
2. read and understand elementary level academic texts.
3. write sentences, paragraphs, and short academic essays.
4. participate in group activities and discussions using appropriate academic language and expressions.
5. prepare and give simple and discipline-related presentations.
6. employ study skills such as note-taking, critical thinking, independent learning and so on.
7. recognize and use both academic and discipline-related grammar and vocabulary.
