Course Description
The comparative perspective has been an important lens through which educators understand our own education practices. This course aims to analyze different education systems around the world and introduce students to new education reforms and innovation in different countries. Students will be introduced to the new thinking of school organization and reflect upon existing practices. In the course, students will discuss diverse issues such as equity, achievement, marketization, cultural influence with cross-country comparisons of regulatory frameworks, and the role of culture.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Describe basic knowledge of major issues and topics surrounding education in both industrialized and developing countries.
CILO-2: Identify how variables such as class, race, gender, (im)migration, state, NGO, transnational entity, policy, etc all play a role in the production of educational outcomes and to challenge dominant assumptions of global education both in specific national settings and trans-nationally.
CILO-3: Evaluate issues of diversity, multiculturalism, decolonization, gender equity, and social justice that underline the common good of education.
CILO-4: Articulate possible ways to think about how globalization, internationalization, their trends, issues, and impact with relation to education and the fundamental task of preparing 21st-century citizens.
CILO-5: Critique dominant modes of international comparison, competition, as well as convergence and divergence of educational practices.
