This course provides opportunities to study about vocabulary in second language learning and teaching, including questions regarding how to select vocabulary for direct instruction, factors that influence incidental acquisition, strategies for deliberate learning and teaching, and assessment of vocabulary knowledge. A survey of pivotal published second language vocabulary acquisition research is provided for the purpose of evaluating the quality of the research and considering its practical implications for teaching.

CILO-1: Make informed decisions regarding the teaching and assessing of vocabulary. CILO-2: Critique, design, and execute second language vocabulary acquisition research. CILO-3: Critically evaluate the pivotal published research on second language vocabulary acquisition. CILO-4: Identify the factors that influence incidental acquisition of vocabulary to develop effective second language vocabulary teaching practices. CILO-5: Design effective vocabulary instruction for deliberate learning, considering factors such as student needs, learning preferences, and task demands. CILO-6: Develop appropriate strategies and tools for assessing second language learners’ vocabulary knowledge and analyse the validity and reliability of these assessment methods.
