Course Description
This course is focused on theories and practices related to effective teaching in early childhood classrooms serving children birth through 8. Students will gain a deep knowledge and understanding of the types of moment-to moment teacher-child interactions that foster learning and development among young children. They will learn to identify specific teaching behaviors that support effective emotional, behavioral and instructional support interactions. Moreover, students will also be given ample opportunities to practice observational skills for identifying effective interaction behaviors as well as reflecting on their practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify theories, trends, and issues in defining and measuring effective teaching in early childhood program settings.
CILO-2: Apply knowledge of child development when interacting with the children in classrooms.
CILO-3: Identify the importance of how young children experience the world in the context of relationships, which lay the foundation for later developmental outcomes.
CILO-4: Synthesize latest empirical findings on effective teaching and children’s outcome.
CILO-5: Articulate why the 'how' of teaching is more important than the 'what', 'who', and 'where' of teaching.
CILO-6: Evaluate theoretical base for research-based complex observation tools for measuring and improving the effectiveness of classroom interactions.
CILO-7: Evaluate effective Emotional Support interactions that promote positive relationships, help children find enjoyment in learning, make children feel comfortable in the classroom, and allow children in support of Emotional interactions.
CILO-8: Evaluate effective Behavioral Support interactions that help child develop self-regulation skills, make he most of learning opportunities, and maintain high-level interests in learning activities across settings.
CILO-9: Evaluate effective Instructional Support interactions that help child learn to solve problems and think creatively, help child to deepen their learning by providing individual feedback to children about their learning, and help children to develop more complex language.
CILO-10: Apply strategies for effective emotional, behavioral, and instructional support interactions when interacting with children across settings and activities.
CILO-11: Demonstrate use of effective emotional, behavioral, and instructional support interactions when interacting with children across settings and activities.
