Course Description
The series of Musicianship courses aims at developing students' mastery of foundational musical skills. With a solid and broad music foundation, such as music theory, ear training and practice of instrument skills, students are trained to become well-rounded music teachers. As well, students are expected to master the use of both traditional and modern technology (computer, music software and web-based tools) in their music exercises and apply that in the future teaching.
This is the continuation course of Musicianship I. The contents of this course include chord progression, identify the essential concepts of chordal seventh, compound melody, rhythms, and more complicated structural counterpoint that are used in the tonal music. The pedagogical approach will also be introduced in the course. The professor will help students applying the introduced medium level music theory and rhythmic patterns in the teaching aspects so that students will have chance to start getting familiar with music teaching for the general music classroom.
Because the nature of the music course, it is suggested that students are expected to daily practice piano and assignments in order to master their keyboard competence. Besides, in order to become a competent music teachers for the general music classroom nationally and internationally, recorder training will also be included in the course. Student should be able to perform simple children songs with recorder by end of the semester.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify and sing diatonic melodies in major and minor keys on both treble and bass clef.
CILO-2: Interpret and read both fixed do syllables and movable scale degree numbers.
CILO-3: Identify numbered musical notation (simplified music notation).
CILO-4: Identify intermediate level of music theory, such as, chord progression, different chords and different forms of inversions.
CILO-5: Classify and interpret all the basic skills and play simple children songs with recorder.
CILO-6: Classify and interpret all the notations on both treble and bass clef and perform medium level children songs from the major textbooks of primary schools used and published in the Greater China region, such as, Macao, Hong Kong and mainland China.
