Course Description
The course examines descriptively the phonetics and phonology of contemporary English. Students will be introduced to the scientific study of speech sounds, articulatory mechanisms and rules governing the combination of sounds in the English language. The major accents described are the British one known as 'Received Pronunciation' (RP) and General American (GA) while other accents will be compared where necessary. Ways to implement the teaching of English phonics and phonology to children will also be discussed.

CILO-1: Describe the mechanism of sound and speech production in English.
CILO-2: Identify the phonemic, segmental and suprasegmental elements of English speech.
CILO-3: Transcribe English words and sentences into phonemic representations using International Phonetic Alphabets.
CILO-4: Demonstrate their knowledge in phonology in self-correction of speech and correction of students' speech production.
CILO-5: Appraise English phonetics and phonology in preparation for further linguistic study.
CILO-6: Develop teaching plans and teach English sounds in relation to orthography.
