Course Description
Focuses on the application of economic principles to the understanding of the structure and functioning of urban areas. Topics discussed include the economic bases of urban growth; economic determinants of urban structure; economic aspects of locational choice; growth and decline in urban economies; and the use of economic principles in the analysis of urban problems.
Intended Learning Outcomes
CILO-1: Identify the factors that drive the formation and growth of cities, including the economic incentives that influence the location choices of households and firms.
CILO-2: Analyze the role of urban land rent in shaping the spatial organization of cities, and how land-use regulations such as zoning and growth control policies affect urban development patterns.
CILO-3: Evaluate the impact of various public policies on urban outcomes, such as education, crime, and housing affordability, and assess their effectiveness in addressing urban challenges.
CILO-4: Apply economic principles and analytical tools to real-world urban issues and problems, and produce evidence-based policy recommendations to improve urban welfare and sustainability.
